Natural Hair Care Ideas

Salons can be very expensive. Although it feels wonderful to pamper yourself by having someone set and style your hair, there are ways to do salon work in the comfort of your own home and for a fraction of the cost. All it takes is a little time and research for these do-it-yourself options that will leave you looking salon great, but not break the bank.

Let’s start with eyebrow or mustache waxing. This may be a good thing to do on a ladies’ night, or at least with the help of a friend. Purchase some depilatory wax at any drug store and heat it up to melting using a pot of hot water on the stove, or the good old microwave. Be sure to test the heat of the stuff with your finger before applying it to the sensitive skin around your eyes. Wax doesn’t need to be hot; it should be very warm, but not burning. While the wax is heating, cut up different sizes of strips of cheese cloth—small ones for your eyebrows and larger for the mustache area (you can also do your legs and bikini area in the same fashion with larger strips and of course more wax). Once the wax is ready, apply an even amount to the unwanted hair. In general, the less wax the better, but be sure to cover the area well. Press the cheese cloth strip evenly over the wax and let it set for a few seconds. Pull the skin taught with one hand, and with the other yank the cloth in the other direction in one fluid movement. It will hurt less if you do this quickly and with confidence. You can use the same cheese cloth more than once.

Let’s move to hair care. If you are interested in a good at-home conditioning treatment, grab a couple of packets of cholesterol or deep conditioning formulas at a beauty supply nearby. If you are interested in natural (and cheaper) products just use warm olive oil. Heat a towel up in the microwave while you apply the conditioning concoction liberally on your hair. Then wrap the now hot towel around your head and relax for a couple of minutes while the conditioner does its work. Finally, take a shower to wash the excess material out of your hair and enjoy a head of shining, brilliant locks.

What about color treatments? You can fix yourself up with a nice set of highlights with a simple over the counter highlight or “hair painting” kit. These kits are second in quality only to the salon and with a couple practice rounds, may be just as good. Another option is squeezing some lemon juice into a bowl, painting liberal amounts on to parts of your hair, and laying out in the sun for a couple of hours. The results are subtle, but sultry.

To get smooth, relaxed skin, the fridge-facial will deliver almost as well as any spa day. Mash up an avocado with egg white and apply to the skin, while two slices of cool cucumber refresh tired eyes.

Don’t waste your money and time on days at the salon or spa when you can throw spa parties in your own home at a fraction of the cost. Be creative and have fun!
