The moon, the queen of the night sky, is known to have profound effects on the Earth. Reigning the tides of the ocean, the movements of plants and animals, the female menstrual cycle and perhaps even our emotions, the power of moon illuminates the night sky and helps the lost find their way in the dark. The bright disk of the full moon and the elegance of the crescent moon capture the imaginations of all people on Earth. It is because of all of this that images of the moon are so commonly portrayed in tattoos.

As there are so many phases of the moon, you can choose to depict your moon tattoos in many different ways. The full moon holds and entirely different significance than a sliver of a crescent. The dark new moon can portray the mysterious aspect of one’s character, as can a shadowy half moon. One can also make an image out of the concept of the dark side of the moon.

Design options are as varied as the imagination allows. The moon can take many traits. The Aztec moon evokes a stoic and wise image, while a cartoonish moon with a big nose may express one’s comical tendencies. There are also the various symbols of the man in the moon, whether serious or funny. Different cultures see different figures in the moon. Mexicans, for example, see a rabbit in the moon. In this way you can link yourself with your ethnic heritage.

If you can’t choose between the phases of the moon you can put them all in a band around your arm or leg. You can also include other astral objects such as stars, the sun or more complex constellations or horoscope signs.

It is also popular to see both the moon and the sun intertwined in an intimate embrace. This can symbolize the duality of the day and the night, or feminine and masculine sides of a person or relationship. It is also common to see fantasy figures coupled with the moon, such as fairies, dragons or one of the many moon goddesses.

Another style moon tattoo is the vintage or classical look. You can use art deco patterns or the traditional broad, round, content face that is seen in many children’s books. You can also choose to put a woman lounging on the crescent of the moon, or within the moon itself. Don’t forget the popular myth that the moon is made of cheese. What ever style you choose for you moon tattoo, be sure and use your imagination to link your identity to that of the powerful symbology of the moon.
