The best way to distract your child while cutting his hair is to put on a television or his favorite video and make your child sit in front of a television so that your child is engrossed in the movie and you can cut his hair on your own. This is surely not an option for me because I myself cannot follow instructions from a book and cut hair but may be it is an option for you, so you may want to consider this. If you are successful at this, you can save your money and the stress. And if not there is always another option, or rather options. 

But if you plan on taking your kid to the barber, you may perhaps let him show you a particular style from a book or magazine or movie and also may be some hairdo he has seen on someone and you can promise him that the barber can do exactly the same and tell him 'Just like your friend who has that hairstyle you admire, you too will look cool in that hairdo.' 

Let's face it, children do need a little management, so make sure you find a barber who is good at handling children, he must be good at talking to children and handling them so that lightens the stress. Try making an appointment with one of the barbers your friend's take their children to. Take the effort to go and meet the barber alone and discuss the problem when you take your child there. Today however a lot of barber shops have chairs that make it easy and comfortable for children to sit and enjoy in.
