Praying Hands Tattoos

One of the most handsome tattoos one could have is that of the praying hands. Not-surprisingly, they are also one of the most common. In addition to the symbolism of prayer, the praying hands image represents a story of true love and self-sacrifice.
Legend has it that the praying hands tell a story of two brothers in the 15th century named Albrecht and Albert Durer. Living in Nuremburg, Germany, they wanted to study art, but knew their father wouldn’t be able to afford to send them both to school. Deciding finally to flip a coin, they vowed the winner would be supported by the other.
Albrecht won the toss. Both brothers promised do the best they could to finance the four years of his studies—Albrecht selling his artwork and Albert working in the mines. Albrecht’s talent in painting surpassed even that of his professors. And Albert worked tirelessly long days in the mine to ensure his brother would get the chance he deserved. When Albrecht graduated he was earning a decent living with his artwork.
Finally the time came for Albert to start his studies. After a week passed, Albrecht returned home to find his brother praying on his knees. His hands were extended heavenward asking selflessly for the success of his brother’s artwork. Albrecht’s heart began to break as he noticed Albert’s hands all broken and mangled from the hard and dangerous work in the mines. Next to him lay a canvas with splatters of paint barely recognizable as a painting. Albert’s hands could no longer be used as for painting.
Albrecht quickly drew a portrait of Albert’s hands in prayer as tears ran from his cheeks. After more than 400 years, Albrecht Durer’s paintings, etchings and charcoals have been displayed in museum all over the world. But his most famous image is that of his brother’s praying hands. It is this story that gives the praying hands tattoo its power.
Couples often get matching praying hands tattoos to symbolize undying love and selflessness. Some men have the tattoo to show the willingness they have to sacrifice and do anything for their partner.
A personal variation of the tattoo is to put one name of the couple in each hand to be specific about whom exactly the tattoo is for. If you don’t want to alter the tattoo that much, you can place the names above or below the image. The praying hands tattoo is a wonderful image and shouldn’t be overlooked when thinking of getting one.
